A bold addition to Deering’s historically inspired Vega line of banjos, the Vintage Star merges the company’s modern instrument-making expertise with the tone, feel, and soul of a late 19th-century banjo. This instrument’s 3-ply violin-grade maple rim is thinned down from Deering’s standard spec, providing a more resonant and responsive voice. The rim is paired with a 12-inch Renaissance low crown head, then finished with a heavy and rich-sounding Dobson tone ring — a spec straight out of the late 1800s. You also get a knot-less tailpiece, and Deering planetary tuners come straight out of the historic banjo tradition. However, the Vega Vintage Star’s most striking feature is found not on the pot. This banjo’s quarter-sawn maple neck is a beautifully streaked slab of smoky ebony, complete with a frailing scoop to facilitate clawhammer playing.
